A Step-By-Step Guide To Living A Joyful Life

We all have heard the statement “Pursuit of Happiness”, “YOLO”, or “Just be happy”. I see these statements everywhere and I have nothing against them. However, I see life differently and my matter of language with happiness is different. In my understanding, Happiness is fleeting, short-lived, and just for a moment; Happiness is precious and I completely agree with that. Still, this post is not to talk about happiness but the goal of this is to introduce a new principle for everybody who hasn’t pursue this word: JOY. Joy is somehow an infinite feeling and a state of feeling bliss in whatever circumstance; joy is an established spirit within. I would like to share some guides step by step to help you gain a joyful spirit. 🙂

Step 1: Stop, rest, and endure – I remember the words from the book of John Green “The fault in our stars” which says that “Pain demands to be felt” and it is indeed felt and it hurts. Now, the opposite of happiness is sadness and just like the way i see it and understand it. Sadness is also fleeting and short-lived. Sadness doesn’t last as well.  When you stop, rest, endure there will be realisations. You’ll realise that the pain felt is a lesson to help and mold you as you grow in this big world. I hope you will now see it that way. So in the future you would be complete and whole.

Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.  James 1:2-4

Step 2: Learn – Learning doesn’t stop, I always say this to all people I meet and when given the chance to encourage people about learning. Achieving joy requires learning and the thinking of continuous desire for learning. Learning is an investment and can take you many places and put you in high places. However, learning how to be on top can result to being entitled, arrogant, and boastful. Learning formal education is good but learning about manners, life, character and values will result to humility and I believe humility is attractive.

Let the wise listen to these proverbs and become even wiser. Let those with understanding receive guidance – Proverbs 1:5

People who accept discipline are on the pathway to life, but those who ignore correction will go astray. – Proverbs 10:17

Step 3: Accept – You cannot change the past and there are events and situations that is out of your control. So there is this word called acceptance, accepting means responding and not reacting. Responding is more positive than to react because reacting bring grieve and irritation and no one wants to welcome that. Once you have accepted an event or a situation. You may realise that the world does not continue to revolve for you so I also say continue moving forward and do better.

Not that I speak from want, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need. I can do all things through Him who strengthens me. – Philippians 4:11-13

But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses. – 1 Timothy 6:6-12

Step 4: Be Honest – People who lie and do not open up are prisoners without even realising it. If you are having a hard time not opening up at least pray and speak it out of your mouth so some thorns in the heart would be pulled out. You know the consequences of not being true to oneself. So I would highly advice to say and confide to elders to help you out. Achieving joy means achieving peace, a life of dishonesty would never result to a joyful life.

And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. – John 8:32

Honesty guides good people dishonesty destroys treacherous people. – Proverbs 11:3,

I know, my God, that you examine our hearts and rejoice when you find integrity there. You know I have done all this with good motives, and I have watched your people offer their gifts willingly and joyously. – 1 Chronicle 29:17

Step 5: Love – What I mean by Love is genuine; It is about selflessness and kindness. Developing selflessness is probably the most difficult one in the world right now because of the trend and influence of the media. I dare and challenge all of you to be selfless and kind; Love others as yourself.

And do everything with love – 1 Corinthians 16:14

Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance – 1 Corinthians 13:4-7

P.S I would say that this one is not easy but it can be worked out and there will always be progress to man who deeply desires to live a joyful life deeply. Overall, Good Luck and God bless!
